Paperwork Deadlines

With the beginning of each semester comes the requirement of submitting the proper documents to the National Office.  The proper forms, their due dates, and the suggested officer in charge of each form can be found on the new Members Information page on the National Website.  You can also directly access that page by clicking here.  If you have any questions about the forms you should contact Chad Pfister, Kevin Stinn, or your respective Regional Vice President.

Membership Education Forum Information

By Kevin Stinn, National Leadership Director

The 2006 Membership Education Forum and National Basketball Tournament will be held at Epsilon Chapter in Ames, IA, on February 3-5.  Registration is $10 per member and will help cover the cost of several meals, entertainment, and programming fees.

Based on the success of the 2005 Leadership Academy, the National Fraternity will continue to use more interactive programming to get attendees increasingly involved.  For the first part of the MEF, the attendees will be divided into groups led by Leadership Academy graduates and asked to work cohesively with other group members, voice their opinions, answer challenging and thought-provoking questions, and actively participate in all activities.  Before lunch, the groups will come together and be debriefed on the morning’s activities.

Following lunch, the attendees will break into discussion groups based on officers and topics.  All the associates and activated freshmen will meet together.  Officer meetings will include the following positions: presidents, membership educators, house managers, recruitment chairs, treasurers, scholarship chairs, social chairs, chaplains/spiritual chairs, and secretaries.  Topical meetings may include alcohol policy, ritual, and risk management.

Though MEF is just a few days away it is still not too late to register for the event.  Lodging information is now available on the official 2006 MEF/NBT website (http://mef.betasigmapsi.org).  Check for more information as it comes.

National Basketball Tournament Information

The National Basketball Tournament will immediately follow the MEF at Iowa State’s Beyer Gym.  Questions concerning the tournament should be directed to Tyler Anderson at tylera84@iastate.edu.

As previously mentioned in Marty’s Boys, National President Chad Pfister will have an entry in this year’s tournament.  So if you are interested in seeing “El Presidente’s Own” compete you should make plans to attend the Tournament.  This is definitely something you don’t want to miss.

Melting Into Our Lives - Monthly Devotion

"Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly . . ."  (Colossians 3:16)

Nothing makes the dreary winter prettier than a fresh blanket of snow. Drab trees turn into beautiful art forms as the white velvet of snow almost brings them to life. The snow is pretty--until it melts. Then the white snow turns brown and black and ugly. It disappears from the trees, which become drab again. As the snow melts  on the ground, it reveal the ugly sight of mud and dead grass.

The snow can be a lot like God's Word. The wonderful message of Christmas can brighten up our winters like the clean white of a fresh snowfall. But as God's Word "melts" into our lives, when it becomes more than just some nice stories to us, then it isn't so pretty.  Take for instance the parable Jesus told of the Good Samaritan. It is a nice story about how the Samaritan helped the poor, beaten man. But when the story sinks into our lives and shows us that we should love everyone, even our enemies as the Samaritan did, then it is no longer a "nice" story. As God's Word melts into our lives, it reveals a lot in us that is ugly--a lot in our lives that we would rather ignore.

Melted snow is not pretty. But unless it melts, it doesn't do any real good. For it is when  snow melts that it is able to soak into the ground and provide moisture--moisture that sustains the corn and other crops during the hot summer.

God's Word isn't always pretty, especially when it "melts" into our lives. But as it melts into our lives, it can do real good in us. When we see that the story of Jesus who came on Christmas is not just "a" story, but "my" story, then it can sustain us through the difficult, "dry" times in our lives. That is why St. Paul prayed in Colossians, "Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly."

God grant that His Word, the good news of Christ Jesus, "melt" into our lives.
