Marty’s Boys Reaches 2000 Subscriber Mark

With the recent addition of e-mail addresses received from the National Fraternity’s Alumni Directory, the subscriber mark for this issue of Marty’s Boys will be well over 2000.  This means that almost 1/3 of all Beta Sig’s receive a copy of Marty’s Boys in the Inbox once a month.  This is a great accomplishment in such a short period of time.

If by chance you receive multiple copies of this issue it is likely that you provided a different e-mail address for the Alumni Directory than what was currently subscribed. You should go to the Marty’s Boys Management page at http://lists.betasigmapsi.org/listinfo.cgi/martysboys-betasigmapsi.org to unsubscribe the appropriate e-mail address.

The National Fraternity apologizes for this inconvenience but due to the large number of e-mail addresses which we received, as well as with those already subscribed, it was difficult to determine what was and was not a duplicate.

Delta Chapter Chartering Weekend Announced

The National Fraternity in conjunction with Delta Colony and the Lincoln Alumni Chapter is pleased to announce that Labor Day Weekend 2006 has been chosen as the Celebration Weekend for the Re-Chartering of Delta Chapter at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

While a formal vote on chartering is not scheduled to occur until the National Convention in August 2006, the National Board of Directors has agreed that it is to the benefit of all parties to set a date to ensure that as many people as possible are able to travel to Lincoln for this great event.

No formal schedule has been established yet for the weekend, but the weekend’s events will start on the evening of Friday, September 1 and conclude on Sunday, September 3.   As more details become available about the event, it will be released to everyone through Marty’s Boys and the Gold Rose.

Beta Sigma Psi Summer Internship Program

If you are an undergraduate member of the Fraternity and you are looking for something to do this summer and would be interested in working with the National Fraternity, than the Beta Sigma Psi Internship Program is for you.

This summer the National Fraternity will once again sponsor non-paid internship opportunities for its members.  This opportunities are excellent way for members to gain real world experience which they can add to their resume.  Currently, the National Fraternity is planning to offer two separate intern opportunities.  The first opportunity is for those members who are interested in marketing, public relations, and advertising.  The second opportunity is for those members interested in computer programming, database management, and website design.  More detailed information about each opportunity is included in the application packet.

If you have any questions about this program please contact Chad Pfister.  The deadline for submission of applications is April 15, 2006.

Click here for the Application packet.

New Discussion Group to be Started

Sometime in the next 7 to 10 days all members of the Marty’s Boys mailing list will be invited to join the Beta Sigma Psi Discussion Group.  This Group is designed to be a true discussion group, in that any member will be allowed to post messages to the group.  This group will be replacing the group that was created several years ago on Yahoo!.  This will be an excellent resource for members and groups to pass along information in a quicker fashion than is currently available.

Membership in this Discussion Group is 100% voluntary.  Any important announcements that are made in this group will be compiled and included in the next issue of Marty’s Boys.  The National Board of Directors will monitor the traffic and content on this group and reserves the right to change the user policy of this Discussion Group.

Beta Sigma Psi Enters Electronic Form Age

The National Board of Directors is pleased to announce that starting on April 1, 2006 that Beta Sigma Psi will start accepting the large majority of its forms from member groups via the internet.  Once the initial bugs are worked out of the system, the National Board plans to eliminate the acceptance of printed forms starting with the 2006 – 2007 school year.

This change will allow the National Fraternity to better track the submission of forms, as well as improve the management of the information which is received from these forms.  This process was something that many Active and Alumni Chapter Presidents had asked for over the past few months. Everyone involved with forms from the National Leadership Director to the Active Chapters is excited about this new change.

Forms will continue to be available via the Members Information page on the National Fraternity’s website at http://www.betasigmapsi.org.

The Registration costs for guests will include all of the above except entry to the Awards Breakfast on Saturday morning.  Instead, they will have entry to the official Beta Sig Spouse’s Tea that will be held on Saturday morning.  In addition to the Spouse’s Tea, spouses will be spending the day together sightseeing around downtown Louisville, taking a guided tour of the historic Seelbach, and other socializing events throughout the day.

Ralph Folkerts Update

Below is the most recent update from their daughter on the condition of Ralph and Shirley Folkerts.  This update was received on March 14, 2006.

Dad moved to Joan Glancy Rehabilitation Center this morning. It seems like a very nice facility, and it is much closer to our home and my work. I’m glad to have made my last trip to the city of Atlanta for awhile. Dad’s new address is Glancy Rehab. Center, 3215 McClure Bridge Rd, Duluth, GA 30096. [Please e-mail Chad Pfister if you would like Ralph’s room number and/or phone number.] He seems very upbeat and is starting to get more oriented to the real world. He can’t wait to start his real “work” of getting strong enough to go home to finish waiting for his bones to heal. For those of you local, Joan Glancy is very near downtown Duluth. I know Dad would enjoy a visit, but the facility asks that anyone other than immediate family please visit during the hours of 4:00 and 8:00 in the evening.

Mom still plans to come home on Thursday of this week. I know she is looking forward to this big step. She’ll sleep better there and will enjoy being in her own surroundings. A couple of the neighbors were nice enough to clean the house for her homecoming. It smells lemony fresh. Thanks ladies!! I continue to seek assistance with her care from anyone who has the time and feels the calling. I really don’t think it will be a difficult job, but she really needs someone’s presence 24 hours (or very close to it) in case she needs the bed pan or needs to get out of the house in an emergency. No heavy lifting (other than plates and bed pans) will be required.

As more information about their condition is received it will be updated on the National Board of Director’s blog at http://www.betasigmapsi.org/blog.   Please keep Ralph and Shirley in your prayers.

NIF Supports Hazing Research Initiative

NIF Pledges $50k to University of Maine

March 2006

CARMEL, IN (March 2006) — The North American Interfraternal Foundation (NIF) recently presented the University of Maine with a $50,000 check at the recent NASPA Conference Fraternity/Sorority Knowledge Community Interfraternal Luncheon to kick off an ambitious fundraising campaign to raise contributions to support the ground breaking hazing research study already underway by Dr. Elizabeth Allan.  Dr. Allan is one of the foremost national authorities on the subject of hazing and serves as Assistant Professor of Higher Educational Leadership at the University of Maine

The Pilot Phase of the study, Examining and Transforming Campus Hazing Cultures, has been completed and involved more than 1800 students, faculty and staff at four institutions.  Dr. Allan and Project Director Dr. Mary Madden are now preparing to move to Phase II which will expand data collection to a larger sampling of undergraduate students.  The study will investigate the nature and prevalence of hazing practices across a range of student groups at colleges and universities in the U.S. Results of the study will be used to make recommendations for intervention and prevention for educators, policy-makers and the general public.

The NIF pledged $50,000 to leverage support from organizations, institutions and corporations to raise the additional nearly $300,000 needed to complete the study.  “The NIF board of directors feels that this study will provide critical information regarding hazing on college campuses to help us understand the underlying cultural issues and to be proactive in dealing with the issue.  We feel that the project is an excellent investment of our time and resources and look forward to creating additional partnerships to fully support Dr. Allan’s efforts,” noted David M. Coyne, CFRE, president of the NIF.

The NIF promotes and supports leadership, educational and research initiatives that advance the North American college fraternal experience.  In addition to Dr. Allan’s study, the NIF also sponsors scholarships for outstanding fraternity and sorority graduate students, and provides grants for educational initiatives positively impacting the fraternal experience.  The NIF maintains an endowment of nearly $1 million with an annual operating budget of $100,000 primarily funded through philanthropic support from national Greek organizations and leaders.

The $50,000 will be used to begin Phase 2 of the project.  “We are extremely appreciative of the NIF’s leadership and support for this research initiative.  Their encouragement has helped to form the coalition of organizations that are working to move this project forward.  The impact of their contributions will reverberate across college and university campuses on a national level, providing critical information that will benefit the health and safety of students,” commented Dr. Elizabeth Allan.

Many organizations have already stepped forward initially as Advisory Board research partners including NASPA, AFA, NCAA, PFA, NIC, NPC and others.  Representatives from these groups form an Advisory Council that meets regularly with Dr. Allan by conference call to provide feedback, guidance and support for her efforts.

For additional information about the issue of hazing, visit www.stophazing.com.  Information about the NIF can be provided by contacting Nancy Frick at 317-848-7829 or visiting www.nif-inc.net.
