Search for Leadership Director Begins

The National Board of Directors is currently accepting cover letters and resumes from members who are interested in serving as Leadership Director of the Fraternity for the 2008 – 2009 School Year. Current Leadership Director, Kevin Stinn, informed the National Board at its July meeting that the 2007 – 2008 school year would be his last year as Leadership Director. As such, the National Board of Directors put together a search committee, headed by Kevin Stinn, and a timetable to ensure that a new Leadership Director will be in place by next Summer.

The position of Leadership Director features a base pay structure with the opportunities for bonus compensation, as well as an expense budget for travel and related items. Interested parties should submit a cover letter and resume to National President Chad Pfister by mail (2913 Lake Town Drive, Columbia, MO 65203) or e-mail (president@betasigmapsi.org) no later than November 30, 2007.

The National Board cannot express enough thanks and gratitude to Kevin Stinn for his commitment and dedication to working to ensure that Beta Sigma Psi is the best fraternity it can be. The National Board looks forward to working with Kevin both now and in the future in making Beta Sigma Psi better. The National Board also wishes Kevin good luck and fortune in whatever God’s plan is for him after his work as Leadership Director.

Congressional Action Possible on Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act

Congress returns to work on Tuesday, September 4th and there is a good chance they will move higher education-related tax legislation which is a natural vehicle to attach the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act (CHIA). As of August 30, there are 156 House sponsors and 31 Senate sponsors of CHIA, which is an all-time high. A complete list of current sponsors can be found here: http://www.fraternalcaucus.org/legislation/chia-sponsors

While it’s not even Labor Day, there have already been major fraternal housing fires at the University of Idaho (Pi Beta Phi) and Iowa State University (Alpha Chi Omega).  Thankfully, no one was injured in either fire but the property damage in both instances was significant and reminds us that the passage of CHIA will make a measurable difference in the quality of safe housing we can offer to future members.

In order to give us the best chance to attach CHIA to legislation moving through Congress this fall, we are asking everyone to do the following things:

1.      Participate in the grassroots Greek Phone March on Wednesday, September 19 (see details below).

2.      Register at the grassroots website (http://fraternalcaucus.org) and use that website to send CHIA letters of support to Congress.

We are closer to passage of CHIA than we have ever been since it passed the House in 2003, but we need everyone's help to get us on a bill moving this fall.

Note: As of September 3, 2007 Beta Sigma Psi has on record with the Fraternal Caucus 103 letters to Members of Congress, ranking us in the Top 1/3 of all Fraternal Groups. Thanks for the support and keep up the hard work in getting CHIA passed.

Greek Phone March – September 19, 2007

A “Phone March” will be conducted on Wednesday, September 19, 2007. Similar to the Phone Marches that have been executed in the past, we are asking everyone to contact their legislators and ask them to co-sponsor the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act or (if they are already sponsors of CHIA) to help push CHIA onto any tax bill moving through Congress this fall. The goal is to have thousands of Greeks nationwide calling Congress on the 19th so that we can push for action on the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act.

Please promote the Phone March as much as possible within your chapters and throughout your alumni/alumnae organizations. Focusing our phone call efforts on one day highlights our issue with Members of Congress and helps them to understand the amount of individuals interested in the passage of this legislation.

Everything you need to promote the Phone March to your members can be found and downloaded at this location: http://www.fraternalcaucus.org/getinvolved/phonemarch

It is very important that all calls are recorded by visiting www.fraternalcaucus.org and using our online form to report their Congressional contacts so we can follow-up as appropriate.  The online form will also help us track which organizations participated in the phone march and how many contacts were made.

Epsilon Chapter Hosts Alpha Chi Omega Recruitment

Normally one doesn’t think that fraternity members play much of a factor in sorority recruitment.  But the members of Epsilon Chapter at Iowa State University did a little extra for the next-door sorority – they gave the women of Alpha Chi Omega their fraternity house to use for the entire week of recruitment.

A house fire on the evening of August 12th displaced all 45 women living there, one day before the start of formal recruitment for sororities.  No one was injured, but the fire caused extensive damage to parts of the third floor.  No cause for the fire has been determined yet.  Meanwhile, the men of Beta Sigma Psi were conducting their traditional “work week” at the start of each semester, to fix up and thoroughly clean their house in preparation for new members moving in later in the week.  The guys worked all night to paint rooms, strip and wax floors, and thoroughly clean the house.  Alpha Chi Omega then took over.

Alpha Chi Omega made quota for their chapter, and the Beta Sigs got their house back.  Epsilon Chapter received numerous notes of support from sorority members, alumnae, others in the Greek community, and even people at the university.  The guys are also working with the other fraternities and sororities on Lynn Avenue to sponsor a block party barbecue to raise money for Alpha Chi Omega.

News from the National Board of Directors

-          The National Board continues to refine the Strategic Planning documents that were shared with members at MEF and through the Alumni Survey. Many thanks to the members who shared their thoughts and opinions about the documents. More information about the Strategic Plan can be found in the upcoming issue of the Gold Rose, due to hit your mailboxes at the end of September.

-          Work with our marketing firm continues.  A two-sided mailer has been designed that will be made available to groups that they can send to prospective members, churches and schools. A sample of that mailer can be found here.

Brother of the Month Award Program

The Brother of the Month Program has started up again. This program is an excellent way to recognize a Brother whether Collegiate or Alumni who has done or accomplished something that has furthered the mission and objective of Beta Sigma Psi.

Submissions for Brother of the Month should be sent to Chad Pfister. The submission should include a short blurb about the Brother that will be published in Marty’s Boys.

Brother of the Month will receive a certificate and a Beta Sig momentomemento.

National President Forms Alcohol Task Force

National President, Chad Pfister, during a conference call with Collegiate Group Presidents on August 22, 2007 announced the formation of an Alcohol Policy Task Force. This task force comprised solely of Collegiate Members will examine the current policies and programs of the Fraternity, as well as other Fraternal Groups, in regards to Alcohol and submit recommendations to the National Council at its upcoming meetings in the Spring.

When asked about why he was creating this Task Force Chad Pfister responded that “Given the current climate and situations on many campuses across the United States, coupled with the fact that the National Fraternity hasn’t seriously addressed this topic since the 2000 National Convention in Chicago; I felt it was important that we have this conversation among the members most directly affected by any policy or program, our Collegiate Members. I’m excited about what our members will talk about and come up with.”

The Task Force is being chaired by past Epsilon Chapter President, Charles Fischer, and will feature one member from each of the Collegiate Groups currently recognized by the National Fraternity. Chapter representatives are being appointed by their respective groups. The Task Force should begin working in late September or early October. More information about sharing thoughts or opinions with the Task Force will be available after the initial meeting.

National Fraternity to Host Pastoral Advisors Conference

On October 16 & 17, Chapter Pastoral Advisors will descend on Kansas City, Missouri, for the first of what will hopefully be regular meetings to discuss ministering to the men of Beta Sigma Psi. An event of this sort has been talked about for many years and everything fell into place this year that allowed the National Fraternity to put together the event. The National Fraternity would like to thank everyone, especially the Chapter Pastoral Advisors, for the support in putting together this event. Look to the November issue of Marty’s Boys for a report on this Event.
