MEF A Success

The 2006 Membership Education Forum was held on February 4.  Over 130 collegiate members from across the country converged on the campus of Iowa State University to learn and meet other Beta Sigs.  The programming of this year’s MEF was built upon the success of the Leadership Academy.  Attendees were broken into smaller groups led by Leadership Academy graduates.  These groups focused on the techniques needed to be an effective leader.  In addition, to these small group sessions, various chapter officers meet together to discuss their specific jobs.

In all, the Membership Education Forum was another great success.  Everyone is looking forward to the 2007 edition of the MEF.  Look to the Spring issue of the Gold Rose for pictures and more information about the 2006 MEF.

Alpha-Alpha Does the Double

The men of Alpha-Alpha chapter once again took home the Cross Heart and Rose Trophy.  This is only the second time in the past 7 happenings of the tournament that a back to back champion has been crowned.

This year’s tournament featured 12 teams, including alumni teams from Delta and Epsilon Chapters; and the ever popular El Presidente’s Own team lead by National President Chad Pfister.  Unfortunately, EPO went 0-2 in the tournament and had to go home early.

Alpha-Alpha went undefeated on its way to its 2nd CHR Trophy in as many years.  In the championship game, Alpha-Alpha defeated the surprise team of the tournament Epsilon Alumni led by Immediate Past National President Chad Winterhoff.

The question on everyone’s minds as they left the tournament was whether Alpha-Alpha would be able to do the three-peat.

Look to the Spring issue of the Gold Rose for pictures and a detailed story about the 2006 National Basketball Tournament.

Hingst Award Winner to get Money

Thanks to the generosity of John Hingst, former National President and Chairman of the Housing Foundation, and the Educational Foundation, the National Fraternity is pleased to announce that the chapter or colony which wins the Hingst Award will receive a $1,000 grant.  This additional prize will serve as an excellent motivator to chapters to achieve top scholastic goals.

The Hingst Award is presented annually to the active chapter or colony that exhibits the top scholastic achievement in the National Fraternity.  Scholastic achievement involves both the chapter’s cumulative grade point average and programming that made the attainment of that GPA possible.  Criteria for the Hingst Award is as follows:

1.     Attach the official Fall and Spring IFC (or if no established Interfraternity Council, college report) grade reports.

2.     Attach your chapter/colony scholastic programming for both associate and active members.  This includes information on grade rules, the chapter test file system, the computer room system, etc.  An executive summary from the Scholastic Chairman should describe your scholastic programming and improvements to the chapter/colony GPA. A list of the past 3 years of academic results and fraternity rankings is useful in summary form for trend analysis.

3.     Normally, the spring semester grades are not available at the time the awards packages are due.  The spring semester grades from the university or college (along with the fraternity rankings from the college or university) can be mailed to the National Office when they are available but no later than July 1st.

Internship Applications Open

This summer the National Fraternity will once again sponsor non-paid internship opportunities for its members.  This opportunities are excellent way for members to gain real world experience which they can add to their resume.  Currently, the National Fraternity is planning to offer two separate intern opportunities.  The first opportunity is for those members who are interested in marketing, public relations, and advertising.  The second opportunity is for those members interested in computer programming, database management, and website design.  More detailed information about each opportunity is included in the application packet.  If you have any questions about this program please contact Chad Pfister.  The deadline for submission of applications is March 31, 2006.

Ralph Folkerts Update

As many of you know from an e-mail sent early this month, former National President and Alpha Alum Ralph Folkert and his wife Shirley were involved in a serious car accident.  Below is an update on their condition from February 14, 2006 from their daugheter.

Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone! My parents spent theirs apart, but Mom sent a message to Dad saying they would celebrate later. Here is a brief update on their conditions:

Mom is improving daily. She sits in a wheelchair at least once a day. Her physical therapist wheeled her down to see Dad for about 30 minutes yesterday. She really enjoyed seeing him - took him a valentine’s card and seemed to have a positive effect on Dad (blood pressure dropped while she was there). The doctor who will repair her less severely injured knee was in this evening. He wants to see her in 2 weeks and plans to due some exploratory surgery to determine if it is better to repair the damage or do a knee replacement.

Dad seems to be taking 2 steps forward and 1 step back. He had his major surgery last Friday. The Ortho. doctor repaired both of his tibia bones at the knee and his collar bone. The surgery only lasted 3 1/2 hours instead of the predicted 6 - 8 hours. The surgery and the extra fluids needed during that time have set him back a bit in the breathing area. His lungs are bruised, and with 14 broken ribs, he was placed on a ventilator after surgery and still remains on it. He battles some fluid around his chest, but the doctors are combating it with diuretics. He is more and more aware every day and does everything his doctors ask him to.

As more information about their condition is received it will be updated on the National President’s blog at http://www.betasigmapsi.org/blog.   Please keep Ralph and Shirley in your prayers.
